Oculus Animi Index

A Solo Show by Equine Artist Tony O'Connor

The horse and the beauty of it's majestic form and spirit are the basis of Tony's work. What better subject for artistic expression than one which embodies power, grace and nobility? As always with his work, the void of the background and simplicity of the pieces serve to highlight the natural physical perfection of these animals. Anyone who appreciates classic elegance cannot but be drawn in.

No two of us see or feel these paintings in the same way. How we perceive them depends not so much on that which is before our eyes, but the life experiences that lie behind them. "In my horses eyes I see the reflected image of my own worth"(Debra Coppinger Hill). There lies a gentleness, a warmth, a sense of power and knowledge in the eyes. No matter how bleak or dark the context may be, there is an element of hope, a spark of emotion that draws you into the piece - sometimes sadness, loneliness, defiance, courage, bravery - a strength of spirit.

As a contrasting theme to his horses, the cows add an element of idiosyncrasy, or quirkiness even, to Tony's work. An extremely inquisitive animal, with a cheekiness to rival any human, there is still a sense of wonder and knowledge in their beautiful dark eyes.
